This inaugural symposium brought together leading and junior scholars from various second language acquisition frameworks to facilitate discussion of the theoretical role(s) of the interlocutor within their approach; considered how the individual differences of the interlocutor in each perspective may influence second/foreign language (L2) opportunities; presented original, robust, peer-reviewed empirical research on interlocutor individual differences from each theoretical approach; and collaborated and outlined existing trends and future areas for research. Our use of the term interlocutor refers to the input provider and communicative partner for learners in formal and informal L2 settings, and individual differences refer to characteristics that we all have, and differ by degree, such as native language, gender, research focus, and training, among others.
Pre-Symposium Readings & Discussion Sessions at IU Many thanks to our generous sponsors: the College of Arts and Humanities Institute, the Dean's office of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs, the Department of Linguistics and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Hispanic Linguistics program.

AILA ReN
The AILA Research Network (ReN) on Interlocutor and Instructor Individual Differences in Cognition and Second Language Acquisition provides a central forum for the systematic investigation into the role of interlocutor and instructor individual differences in cognition and behavior believed to mediate second language acquisition. Specifically, we aim to (1) create awareness of existing and ongoing research on this topic, (2) encourage additional study and collaboration, and (3) support the development and exchange of ideas on projects that explore how interlocutor and instructor individual differences influence cognition and behavior related to acquisition, and what this means for both theory and practice. Our ReN is composed of seasoned and junior faculty from various countries and theoretical backgrounds, as well as advanced- and beginning-level graduate students. We welcome new members to our growing community; for more information please see www.individualdifferencesinsla.com and contact Laura Gurzynski-Weiss ([email protected]) if you are conducting studies on interlocutor or instructor individual differences, interested in joining this term of the ReN, and/or interested in learning more about this burgeoning area of research.
